Paul McCartney talks songwriting with Sodajerker

We are overjoyed to reveal that our guest on the podcast this Friday will be Paul McCartney. We recently sat down with Paul at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) for a conversation about his new album Egypt Station, which is also available from 7th September.

As it does for millions of people around the world, Paul McCartney’s music occupies a very special place in our hearts. We were raised on his songs and, at this point, life is quite unimaginable without them. So, to get the opportunity to spend time with Paul talking about what he does best – songwriting – was the thrill to end all thrills. We can’t thank him enough for doing it.

    Just superb lads! I know you’ve waited a long time to snag Paul so it must be a dream come true. As a huge fan of Paul’s work (who isn’t?!) I was delighted to listen to this, hoping for nuggets of wisdom which might help in my own songwriting and it was great to hear plenty of these. It would have been nice to have heard more about the process during the Beatles years but then I imagine so much of that has been blurred by time as well as so many songs being shaped and arranged by the band and George Martin too. Great to hear that Paul uses Voice Memos! I was really hoping for some magic formula for those Macca melodies but I suppose, like so much else with songwriting, he is a conduit and these things are just divined intuitively a lot of the time. Really great questions though – I wondered at first if the Egypt Station focus was a prerequisite of Paul’s but after hearing your bonus episode it makes complete sense to paint a picture of him as the songwriter he is at this moment. Superb work with everything you do – a real inspiration! And good luck in your own songwriting too; you must be dab hands at it by now 😉

    Very happy for you both. I’ve hoped for years that you’d land McCartney, as he obviously not only embodies the songwriting skills you’ve so expertly deconstructed over your many episodes, but he also hails from your hometown. Really looking forward to sitting down and hearing this episode. Cheers.
